HEAT PUMP Incentive - City of Gustavus Receives Grant from National League of Cities
August 14, 2024
The City of Gustavus is proud to announce its participation in the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Advancing Economic Mobility Rapid Grant program.
The City is excited to provide residents with the ability to switch from heating oil barged into the community at costs as high as $6 per gallon, to air-source heat pumps using clean, affordable electricity produced at the local Falls Creek hydropower project. Through the Advancing Economic Mobility Rapid Grant program, the City will offer incentive payments of $500 per heat pump purchased for installation in Gustavus homes, businesses, agency offices, and City buildings to heat or to supplement heating of those structures electrically. Our program will help residents to access an additional $500 incentive from local utility Alaska Power & Telephone, to access federal tax credits, and to utilize Power Cost Equalization to help pay for home heating costs.
As one of 12 municipalities selected across the country, Gustavus will also receive coaching and support from NLC's expert staff to help promote economic mobility for its residents. NLC selected the City of Gustavus for the program because of its demonstrated commitment to expand and test innovative solutions that advance residents’ economic mobility. In the months ahead, the city will engage in NLC-led peer learning opportunities to support economic mobility.
NLC CEO and Executive Director Clarence Anthony stated “We know that the economic vitality of a municipality is directly linked to the economic stability of the people who live there. NLC applauds the communities selected for prioritizing economic mobility, and we look forward to working hand-in-hand over the next several months to maximize the impact of every dollar in this grant.”
The City of Gustavus’s heat pump incentive program application period is open now through January 20, 2025.
